SINBAD AND THE EYE OF THE TIGER (1977) **1/2 It's rare for a film to enjoy acting as universally horrible as this, but it's somehow endearing. All of them, even Jane Seymour, I hate to say it, especially Jane Seymour. But some people are just more forgivable than others, and the poor quality of every single performance is almost...not an asset, but somehow makes it all more credible as a doctrinaire B film. The plot demands credibility (not that it provides any) as a variation and loosely drawn stew of most Saturday matinee legends, which is kind of relaxing. Witches turning into birds, sure. Wild eyed visionaries on lost islands, why not? Monster people with horns on their heads...of course. It's all nothing more than an excuse for Ray Harryhausen to trot out more stop animation monsters, and there are some very good ones. Not the greatest of his work (though the troglodyte vs. sabre-tooth tiger battle is most impressive), I'd say, but the film is liberally literally littered with the glorious creations. In the most positive sense, obviously. Some movies try to be real, and some movies revel in revealing themselves as movies, and this one kind of winks and tries to convince you that it's a movie. As if a movie is something regularly greater than itself. Fun. Funny.
