SHI DI CHU MA (The Young Master, 1980) ** Given that I don't know a lot about it, my preference in kung fu flicks is their occasional penchant for the bizarre. Having a central hero who carries around a bench, looking to kick peoples asses with it counts. As does assault with an overgrown fan and defense with an opium pipe. People who actually know anything about kung fu or ballet, and the rest of us to a lesser extent, will marvel at Jackie Chan's elegantly choreographed violence. It will also come to most of our attention that the amiable plot is delivered more sporadically, and might prove not to entirely make sense if it were deemed worthy of such intimate examination. Who cares? Where else are you gonna see Mr Chan attack an entire cordon of cops, whilst wearing a dress? If that, and a very funny line about urination, ain't enough you're probably right, but don't bother the rest of us about it.
