ROBIN HOOD: MEN IN TIGHTS (1993) ** It has fairly amusing bits at a reasonably regular rate, but I expect much more out of Mel Brooks. There's no big joke, just a bunch of little ones littered along the way of the myth. Plenty of recognizable actors who could have done more with more, and far too much time spent on Cary Elwes, who doesn't so much with anything. Good turns by Dom DeLuise (doing Brando), Roger Rees, Mark Blankfield, Amy Yasbeck, Isaac Hayes, Richard Lewis, and Tracey Ullman, but the wittiest performance is definitely Brooks himself, as a rabbi with a wagonload of sacramental wine, and with an elevated religious awareness that life itself is a sacrament.
