THE NEVERENDING STORY II: THE NEXT CHAPTER (1990) ** Kids love it, and it's definitely better than the first one. It's better because of the pacing, but part of that pacing is to give short shrift to Colin Arthur's fine creatures. I guess it works ok because they don't have much idea of what to do with them anyway. The acting's still not good, and plot's still very thin, but that's not the kind of stuff that bothers children and it's not always the stuff that bothers me. The film tries to establish some kind of nexus between film and children's books, some on-ramp, and given the relative success of the two this should be seen as at least as altruistic as self-aggrandizing. It's a nice effort towards a nice idea anyway, with some interesting things to look at (if not think about) and...ahem!, the kids love it which is probably worth more than a lot of things we value more highly.
