MADE FOR EACH OTHER (1939) * Oh, man! This film has SO many serious problems, and so few of them are even worth talking about! Jimmy Stewart moves from being emasculated by his mother to being henpecked by his Carole Lombard wife. Meanwhile he works in a spectacularly boring law firm where he's conned into doing everyone else's work, for which he isn't respected. He is prototype Corporate Era man. It's very difficult watching Jimmy pretend to be such a lame and weak individual. Whole flock of characters, actually, failing at life for reasons that escape both themselves and the writers. Carole gives birth but they don't notice much or care about it until it gets sick. Yes, the final refuge of the incompetent writer: sick babies, if you can't feel sorry for us at least feel sorry for them! Well, ok, but only because it's in the movie, too. It's the kind of film where you find yourself desperately wondering what's the least possible time to wrap up the mess with any kind of ending.
