THE LAST MIMZY (2007) **1/2 Presents and succeeds as a children's film, but works as well over broad-stroked metaphorical base for adults. Humanity is losing something. Yes. Children still have it. Um, hmm. Where do we lose it, where does it go? Ok. Timothy Hutton and Joely Richardson, the sympathetic Seattle yuppie couple, good workers and loving parents, settle into metaphysical denial. Rainn Wilson and Kathryn Hahn, the young adults fighting to hang on to that tenuous hint of a glimpse of a grasp, pouring their faith and energy into what must surely sometimes feel a fool's errand of futility. Meanwhile, kids, magic, faith, time travel, metal detectors at elementary schools.but Mimzy, the bunny stuffed chock full o' strangeness, is it good or bad? Who makes such assumptions and does it say more about Mimzy, or them? What's the role of the government in all of this? Does it even have one or does it just think that it has a role in everything? Will the production team have the guts-or is it apologia for fear, or bad taste-to let it all go wrong in the end. Warning or celebration?
