INNERSPACE (1987) ** Joe Dante's film about when Randy Quaid got injected into Martin Short's ass. I'm sure that there's been a worse premise for a film, but it doesn't immediately come to mind. Given all that, it's not so bad. Quaid wouldn't have been my choice for Mr. Machismo astronaut, but he pulls it off fairly well. Meg Ryan is burdened by a horrible hair-do, but it looks like maybe it's growing out a little bit in the later scenes, or at least you get used to it so it's not as distracting. Whenever things get dangerously slow Dante lurches towards the nearest cliché, and the climactic “action” feels like it was written by a small collective of biology nerds while waiting for their coffee from the automated machine to cool down, but it's not pretentious and there's never any question that its heart is in the right place (because you can see it). I enjoy the Irish stories of the wee people more, and it's not nearly as bad as it could have been.
