ARACHNOPHOBIA (1993) *1/2 They're taking this way too seriously, and it's not like they came up with all these great ideas that just don't work, either. I normally ignore the producer section of the opening credits, but I would suggest that Steven Spielberg is a name and personage that cannot be ignored. As producer it spells something akin to disaster. He has his own approach to film-and has given us some excellent films-but while it can be painful watching him imitate himself, his formula straddles the fields of senseless and nauseating in the hands of lesser mortals. So they have this stupid plot, and go out of their way to pretend that it could be real . What? These spiders don't even mutate into giants or shoot lasers out of their eyes or anything? It's put together well enough that they must be intentionally moving at this…deliberate…pace, but what they're building isn't tension it's hope. These people would be nice enough in real life, but as a film family I hope the spiders eat 'em, and soon!
