THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS (2002) *1/2 Epic in reach, comic book in grasp. Ever since I was a teenager I've taken immense pride in my contempt for all things hobbit. That being the case, I was nothing less than appalled at how much I enjoyed Fellowship of the Rings. This time I'm vindicated. Peter Jackson either gets caught up in the story and forgets that movies are supposed to be interesting, or Tolkien's plot is simply too much for him to overcome. Either way, the film is littered with imbecilic characters laundering nonsensical speculation and interacting with each other in a manner previously reserved for lobster lobotomy experiments. Dobbit the house elf from Harry Potter makes an appearance, there's an Eeyore of the forest thing and a guy with really bad hair named Legoland, but none of them have anything to do with each other, save being stuck in the same stupid story. The special effects and computerized stuff is incredible, absolutely fascinating, but more than being endearing it makes me wonder why they never put this much effort into filming something good. Incoherent, interminable, abject literal and aesthetic misery absolutely devoid of purpose-a true monument to the literary work.
