JEEPERS CREEPERS (2001) * This couldn't have been a classic horror film, or comedy spoof, but it would have fared better if it had aimed more squarely at the latter. Whether it was even trying for comedy is open to debate, but that it lacks humor is not (the only other certainty is that it's trying to frighten teenage girls). There were opportunities: the stupid college kids could have been camped up, the winged demon is an excellent candidate for strange utterances, the cops could have been even more yokel, everyone at the diner could have turned out to be a werewolf on intrevenous vodka, the entire thing could have turned out to be a prank courtesy of a deranged Johnny Carson...but no. Instead what we get is humorless, very reminiscent of Stephen King's really bad work, not his very worst, which is indeed without redeeming qualities of any kind, but the next half-level up. In other words-not scary, not funny, not smart, no characters, not stupid enough to be amusing, not pretty, with barely enough tension to keep you awake...that, I suppose, is the strong suit-barely enough tension to keep you awake. The song is stupid too.
