GOOD MORNING, VIETNAM (1987) **1/2 For ten minutes or so it appears that Robin Williams is going to do a non-political show about Vietnam. Interesting, daring, almost avant garde in a Norman Rockwell sort of way...a half hour later his superiors are screaming at him for playing acid rock like the Beach Boys, and he's airing an interview in which he suggests to Nixon that he (Nixon) have a sex change operation. We love ya Robin, we knew you couldn't do it. As funny as his stream of consciousness mockeries of everything sacred and profane are, as pointed as his political innuendos, as provocative as are the implications of his actions on his life and the lives of those around him...Robin Williams is not the funniest man in this film. That honour would have to go to none other than Cu Ba Nguyen, a nomination for the all-time "stole your scene" award as the homoerotic bar owner with a cheesy smile and green suit. The entire cast is strong, the writing good though it feels intentionally directed, and the message eternal: the herd are idiots, only the individual can save them from each other as they so unquestionably deserve.
