YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN (1974) **1/2 Gene Wilder has great hair, Marty Feldman incredible eyes, and that's before you even get to Teri Garr. The rest of the cast is also tremendous-Gene Hackman is absolutely wicked as the kind old blind man, Cloris Leachman perfect as Frankenstein the Elder's girlfriend, Peter Boyle brilliant as the monster, Madeline Kahn as a different kind of monster, Kenneth Mars entirely unintelligible as the Inspector. The sets are great, the script is chock full o' Mel Brooks funny bits....but it somehow never gets much momentum going, leaving the film substantially less than the sum of its wonderfully oversized parts. The climax is an exception as Mary Shelley is abandoned for Freud and we come to find that it really is all about Schwanzstuckes. Achtung!
