VIVA MARIA! (1965) ** It's got a nice opening theme by Delerue, some fine circus wagons, lousy vaudeville routines by Jeanne Moreau and Brigitte Bardot, and a lot of totally flat slapstick. For 75 minutes this is a genuinely lousy movie. Then they get the revolution going a little bit and it flickers for awhile. The slant of the American newsmen is very funny, George Hamilton is over-the-top and martyr-like. They should have given him more than five lines. The finish is fun and there's some nice symbolism and ramshackle paint-peeling Central American architecture down the stretch. I think the fake cactus was my favorite part.
