2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968) *** At times it's as intense as any movie ever made, when silence is used like a bludgeon. Obviously it's a technical masterpiece, and not just for its time. It unfolds so slowly that eventually you wonder things like how anyone could possibly get anything done in 90 minutes. The last half hour is absolutely brilliant until Stanley Kubrick runs himself into a corner that even he can't think his way out of, or how to embellish.
