TREASURE PLANET (2002) *1/2 I'm going to avoid the obvious question, "Why does anyone feel the need to do this to Robert Louis Stevenson?" Instead I will note that the animated clipper ships here are of the space variety, and that instead of battling storms they deal with imploding stars and so on. The subtexts on the difficulties facing today's youth are neither insightful, interesting nor welcome, but for the most part the classic tale isn't savaged too much. Which means that there's part of an exciting plot, and cardboard cut-outs of interesting characters mostly benefitting from the voice "talents" of the likes of David Hyde Pierce (wimpy astronomer dog), Emma Thompson (the captain is a female cat), and Martin Short (mindless robot, not type-casting). There's nothing particularly clever or original about it, but there are many worse ways to waste time, and there's an even chance that you'll get to hear the laughter of your children, which is always great fun.
