TORN CURTAIN (1966) ** All I can figure is that Paul Newman really, really wanted to work with Alfred Hitchcock. I refuse to believe that Newman was ever unable to recognize the incredible wealth of defects in this script. It reminds me of the books about the Hardy Boys when the bad guys tie them up and confess everything just before the boys escape and bring them to justice. Problems such as spies hanging around shooting the shit about all their top secret activities for what seems like hours in a relatively public place might be ok in a sloppy sentimental dog movie, but in a Cold War thriller they're absolutely unacceptable. It has some decent acting and nice weirdness (the crazy East Berlin lady in colorful clothes), but Julie Andrews is neither.
