THAT DARN CAT! (1965) ** "D.C. makes the scene all over town." Ok, maybe the squares were right, maybe some of the hep cat talk doesn't sound quite so mod on Monday. But Robert Stevenson's meticulous insistance that every single character get exactly what they deserve will live forever! There is no element of randomness in the teleology of a master. So Robert has all the gentle effects around the sides, the problem is that he has an (ahem!) dog of a plot. I mean, really, who wants to watch people follow a cat around for two hours? Even if they're FBI agents saying silly things in utter seriousness. In their best outings Hayley Mills and Dean Jones could have made it alright, but she's at that awkward age where she's preoccupied with whether her zits are covered up (answer: almost), and his best moments are spent sneezing. So I'd suggest paying attention to everything but the plot and actors.
