THE SUN ALSO RISES (1957) 1/2* Textbook demonstration of why you don't film literary masterpieces. Where Hemingway's work was courageous the film is gutless, where the novel is indirect the film is utterly incoherent, where the written work is insightful into the human condition the film spends 45 minutes introducing the bulls into the arena. Ava Gardner is absolutely nauseating, there is no beginning of a hint of an explanation as to how she got any of her drunken boyfriends. Tyrone Power is in the Al Gore/Pinoccio league of wooden headedness, Errol Flynn is fly paper. Spectacularly senseless and superficial rendering of a novel that traded in meaningful asides and piquant symbolism.
