THE SOUND OF MUSIC (1965) ***1/2 Sometimes known as "The Tramp Family Sinners," this story is so entertaining on the surface, and the characters so engaging, that the metaphorical implications of this tale of a middle-aged draft dodger fleeing the country with his live-in lover, and 7 children of a previous wife that died mysteriously, are often overlooked. Julie Andrews is the proto-hippie guitar-slinging hot blond nun on probation that catches the captain's eye. It is, perhaps, this very role that drove her to later (in real life) emblazon her automobile with a bumpersticker declaring "Mary Poppins is a Junkie." The Rodgers & Hammerstein score sways, but Marjorie McKay (singing through the face of Peggy Wood) is absolute Holy Thunder in her rendering of "Climb Every Mountain." Presaging Marlon Brando, The Trapp Family Singers refused to accept an award given to them by culturally debilitated fascists.
