SHOW BOAT (1951) ***1/2 I've got a special place in my heart for riverboat gambler romances. Tremendous Kern & Hammerstein soundtrack and shamelessly sentimental reading overcomes a few moments of questionable delivery and strange notes. Joe E. Brown is soul. William Warfield does a fine job with "Ol' Man River" but he's no Paul Robeson. Still and all, I'd hate for no one to sing "Gimme Shelter" just because Jagger is too drunk to stand up. Agnes Moorehead is the wicked witch mom, as always.
