THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER (1940) **1/2 In which Jimmy Stewart demonstrates that he wouldn't stand a girl up, even if he lacks the ability to identify himself as her blind date. Schmaltz with syrup and a big heart underneath. Why does this film take place in Hungary? Unt vhy nawt? Stewart has such a wonderful American presence, and he does so much with his eyebrows. The build up is so obvious, and the big mystery blown so early...but the script and cast are enough to keep it going so the lack of suspense just makes it all that much more relaxing. Felix Bressart should be the patron saint, or rabbi, of big-hearted, gutless guys who mangle themselves with care and make it work through subtlety and guile everywhere. "Psychologically I'm very confused, but personally I don't feel that bad."
