ROMEO AND JULIET (1968) ***1/2 Without question one of the most physically beautiful films ever made. The locations are beautiful, the entire cast is beautiful, the musical theme exquisitely, timelessly beautiful. Franco Zeffirelli's touch in shooting the landscapes and faces without getting overtly artsy is perfection. Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting are an incredibly attractive couple, though she evokes comparisons to Woody Woodpecker when she laughs. The leads are winsome, winning, completely up to their demanding roles, but several scenes are stolen by Michael York as Tybalt and John McEnery as Mercutio. The violence is shot in a wonderfully frenzied manner, and the love scenes without embarrassment. Whoever wrote the screenplay really had a way of turning a phrase, but I don't like the sad ending.
