RETURN OF THE KILLER TOMATOES! (1988) ** It's not inspired nonsense, but it's semi-consistent and somewhat entertaining nonsense. It resolutely refuses to take itself seriously which, given the subject matter, was the only avenue available to it. Or was it? Yes, yes, it was, don't go there, don't even look! There might be a malignantly militant vegetable! Aieee! The script and production are even dumber (and cliché to the point of uneventfulness, even during the attack phases) than the immediately previous lines, but the thing is largely saved by some very good performances. Young George Clooney, spouting a full shock of hair that's every bit as astonishing as the tomatoes, creates moments that wouldn't have otherwise existed with tawdry lines and emotions, raised and thorny eyebrows, and authentic California sensibilities regarding what constitutes land-based items of interest. John Astin is perfect as the mad scientist, and Karen Mistal is milieu credible as the "perfect woman." Not that she doesn't get the joke, she clearly does, more that it's on the rest of the characters, and anyone in the audience who doesn't get it. Doesn't get what? Oh, go on, this film's waay too deep for you!
