THE PINK PANTHER (1963) **1/2 In which Peter Sellers systematically, and decisively, destroys the world's perception of the French as sophisticated and cultured. Speaking through his nose in oblivious confusion to all that surrounds him, stumbling over all that exists, he single-handedly gives birth to a cartoon-like stereotype. Claudia Cardinale is cute, and David Niven dignified, but their scenes are interminable and ruin the momentum that Sellers repeatedly creates as Inspector Clousseau. Who but Blake Edwards would stage a car chase scene around a roundabout in which no one goes around?
