PAYBACK (1999) *1/2 It's a different kind of feel-good movie. Mel Gibson is a very bad man, with a smack-poppin' dye-blond wife who's happy enough to set him up in the midst of robbing the Yakuza in exchange for some petty cash. He also has a dye-blond hooker girlfriend that's kind of sweet and has a big dog. Part of the problem is a genuine miscommunication, the honkey-mob (run by Kris Kristofferson) thinks he wants $130K but it's really only $70K, because he only wants his own cut back. Not enough shit blows up, except for this one time, and the lines aren't nearly as good as other movies of this genre, except for definitely the last one, but there's just something about it that makes you feel really good. Maybe it's the way he sets up the bad cops for one of his many murders. No way those lazy bastards should share in his earnings!
