MONSTERS, INC. (2001) **1/2 Kids' movies don't have to eventually say anything, but it's nice when they do. This one kind of does and offers shining moments, especially early on, of originality welcome in any genre. That monsters are a corporation, up to no good of course; that the monsters have a heart about scaring children but are in competition with each other, the doors to anywhere that manifest themselves whenever needed, the sweet little girl (for a cartoon!)...there is much worthy of admiration and, even better, affection. I could have used a little bit more of the multi-cultural approach to monsters, and why the western world kids aren't scared (how could anything be scarier than Reagan?), but my children laughed quite a bit so it served its purpose. John Goodman is the best voice as Sully (who apparently appeared on the cover of Where the Wild Things Are), but there's also James Coburn, Billy Crystal, Jennifer Tilly and Steve Buscemi.
