THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE (2000) ** It's very difficult to deny a character the floor when his name's in the title, he's a malevolent dictator, and he's transmogrified into a llama, among other things. So this baby's gonna rise or fall on the dubious if unique talents of David Spade's voice. Of course part of Spade's schtick is that he's irritating, and so it naturally follows that he's most popular among people who enjoy being irritated. And children, who enjoy natural immunity against irritation. It's a simple enough tale, so long as you don't question the scientific foundation for it all, and there are several scenes that are substantially more humorous than irritating. John Goodman's voice is the ham-headed proletarian, determined that his oppressor be good. No questioning the psychological foundation of that one anyway. What culture hasn't suffered (alleviated suffering) from Stockholm Syndrome? But don't watch for the political metaphors, you can do just as well looking out the window. Watch because you enjoy being irritated, or spending time with laughing children.
