CINDERELLA (1950) **1/2 Anticipates the Animal Liberation Front in that the only interesting characters are lab mice (previously liberated by ALF), and all of the humans are either drab or evil. Well, Anastasia and Drusilla are still interesting, though-I mean, they way they walk like semi-erect dinosaurs with their asses hanging out like dining room tables and bobbing like fishing lures. Surely this is a favourite of fetishists somewhere. Not as dramatic, but certainly more impressive, is the other animation. They try so many cool things, all of which work: the bubbles and shadows, the moon on the water, the light, the pumpkin shards, just great stuff. But my number one concern about this film is the plot. I mean, how can anyone even recognize it, much less accept it at face value? The prince has turned down every other girl in the kingdom, but everyone's sure that he'll also reject Cinderella if she doesn't have a designer gown and fancy carriage? Really? She'd have been better off in the shadows, plotting the liberation of mice.
