THE APE (1940) ** In which Boris Karloff invents stem cell research. Also notable for some psychological aspects that were ahead of their time relating to trauma and transference. And it's even an entertaining movie! I don't recommend spending a lot of time developing a philosophical angle to the sequence where Boris murders (fantasy) an actor (real) wearing a (real) gorilla suit whilst pretending to be a gorilla (fantasy), then drapes the suit around himself (real) in an effort to facilitate his (fake) research (that someone else would make real), but I assure you that more ludicrous paths have been pursued. Most often by the more desperate students of Kant. And then there's you/me (vicarious fantasy, vicarious reality) watching (reality). No, it's probably better to merely marvel at the circus performers, and alternately applaud or get mad at the villagers, and laugh whenever the ape suit gets too fake. There are enough challenging things in life, without a Boris Karloff movie becoming one of them.
