AFRICA SCREAMS (1949) ** The great white hopes, Abbott and Costello, take on the dark continent. Doesn't have quite the potential of Shaft in Africa or Tarzan the Fearless, but better lion and gorilla suits. For some reason, unlike those other heroes, A&C are quickly surrounded by a group of degenerates including a lion tamer, a big game hunter, and socialite treasure hunters (well, now that I think on it, Tarzan had trouble with them also, they must be ubiquitous in Africa). For an A&C flick there aren't any great moments that will stay with you (well, maybe Costello's crocodile imitation), but there's more story line (not to say plot) than usual. If that isn't enough, you can settle back into the pageantry of dilemmas, and consider how Shaft or Tarzan might have handled them even differently.
