THE MAN (2005) ** For the early going I thought it was a stroke of...not genius, but something somewhat similar...casting Samuel L. Jackson and Eugene Levy in a buddy comedy. Opposites, balance, but there's just too much of both. Eventually Samuel looks more silly than intimidating, and Eugene always eventually manages to get annoying. It's too bad there's so little emphasis on the wives: Gigi Rice and Rachael Crawford project a lot of personality in just a few lines each, they could have easily entertained while setting the guys up for dramatic moments of derring do (or in Eugene's case, heroic wimpiness). The schtick gets old but never quite runs out, I considered myself disappointed but entertained...it's not thought provoking...ready to see Eugene back in supporting roles, and Samuel L. playing serious ball in a league of similar types, or with less playing time.
