TARZAN IN MANHATTAN (1989) *1/2 Ok, so there's a mediocre female CPA's conception of Tarzan, a well aged Tony Curtis, and a prematurely off the track Jan-Michael Vincent. There are still creative minds in Hollywood, or maybe just ones who cook with whatever ingredients they can afford. The historic opportunity is, needless to say, sadly squandered. Tony Curtis' timing rarely struck me as so brilliant as advertised, but it's clear that he once had something, and he's relinquishing it reluctantly. Jan's just so miscast as the geeky rich guy with awful glasses that you have to figure that it's one of his enemy's lawyers doing the casting in purpose. I guess he deserved it, we all have our moments, it's got to be tough to play them out in public, even if you're a public player. Lots of clichés, nothing special about it, they never just set any of them loose ...and yeah, I know that Tony's two decades past his prime and Jan's prime lasted two blinks of an eye, but if they would have just turned them loose to roam around the script a little, man, you might have had something more worth remarking on.
