STORMBREAKER (2006) **1/2 Part James Bond part Dennis the Menace, Alex Pettyfer explodes onto the scene like an atavistic GM modification of the Pepsi Generation!...oh, what am I saying? It's not really all that good. (Would that be good?) It's not bad though. The action catches you off guard early, maybe, if you're older and don't expect it from everything, and after that it's fairly relentless, which will likely only strike you as a virtue of you're of certain slender age. It's based on a respectable young adult book, I guess, but the entire thing has the feel of a demographics department ploy. Young Alex struts about and breaks things and people but is sensitive but also issues smart alecky responses to the baddies.he's a 12 year old girl's dream. Of course such girls may bring boyfriends along so, why there's Alicia Silverstone to give you some sense of the glories that await in the very near future, my son. And I think that's it, that's why it works, pretty much: it's a healthy sense of the future that's not entirely realistic. That and the special effects are pretty good, and say what you want but the relentless action doesn't allow you to waste much time pondering any other aspects of production.and some of the peripheral characters (Bill Nighy!, Missi Pyle) so intentionally overplay their parts that you can't help but stop in admiration. Will it be all the rage 20 years from now? Get real, but it did its part to give a lot of kids a happier summer.
