MIAMI VICE (2006) ** I don't think I ever watched the tv show, so I can't say much about that . I do know that these guys aren't wearing pastel suits, which kind of pisses me off. What do they think they're doin'? I thought the whole thing was about pastel leisure suits! Even the Ferrari is black. So I can safely say that it's not completely authentic. Colin Farrell is either pretty good or really bad…I can't quite figure…I mean, about the only thing that I ever liked about the tv show type was how caught up in himself Don Johnson was, without actually taking any of it too seriously. But DJ was caught up in his character, whereas Colin seems caught up in himself as an actor. Overplaying every scene he can get his silent mug in. It's my favorite part of the film. Jamie Foxx is much more credible as a tough guy, except when they're having those manly heart-to-hearts. But again, that's a funny part. Lots of explosions and such, and every time it threatens to develop a plot someone figures out something without any explanation how. Less challenging that way, you see, if someone else does all the work and doesn't bother you with details. I like John Murphy's incidental music, like good pinball machine music. Throughout it all Michael Mann does a good job of keeping things looking right, or at least an interesting version of right. If you came into a Miami Vice flick expecting more than this you deserve to be disappointed.
