LADY AND THE TRAMP (1955) **1/2 Oh, humans can be so cruel to dogs. And dogs are so good. This is one of the more romantic animated dog movies. Laugh if you want but it can't be easy generating that kind of magic by flipping through stills of fake canines. I don't know what they think it all has to do with Peggy Lee, but she's cool even if I don't really dig these musical numbers. They're not awful, or even bad, but anyway. The zoo sequence is probably worth a decade or two of textbook for even the most talented young animators, and the Italian restaurant scene is probably about as romantic as anyone since Valentino. I like Jock best, though, Jock's my favorite character here. Yeah, Tramp's a wild-eyed young dog with radical ideas, and a good one; but Jock's a rock.
