I HEART HUCKABEES (2004) ** I love the concept and ambition, the casting is very good and the actors (Isabelle Huppert, Dustin Hoffman, Lily Tomlin, Naomi Watts, Jude Law, Mark Wahlberg, Jason Schwartzman...in order of effectiveness, but all effective...wow!)) all offer glorious performances. I understand that this is a very difficult sort of thing to write...no genre so much as a portrayal of the ongoing battle between teleology and nihilism that we alternately face down and get our asses kicked by. The pithy aphorisms aren't badly chosen or strewn, but I don't think that there's anything here for anyone who paid much attention in Remedial Existentialism. The next, more immediate problem...it's neither illuminative nor particularly entertaining. It has its moments, but it drags. So I guess nihilism prevails, powered by Isabelle's incredible, perfect legs. Waal, at least it got its ass kicked by something formidable .
