DON'T LOOK NOW (1973) *** Genuinely frightening. Donald Sutherland is a great nut, but here his nuttiness translates into an edge-and he's ultra-rational. Venice is shot beautifully, all grays and shadows, eerie but enchanting. The religious sites are played wonderfully, and the editing invokes the strange frequencies that are the film's subject. The climactic scene (as opposed to Julie Christie's climax) actually made me think of the closing moments of The Godfather. That's scary.
