CODE INCONNU: RÉCIT INCOMPLET DE DIVERS VOYAGES (Code Unknown: Incomplete Tales of Seven Journeys, 2000) **1/2 Left bank production and modest reach. Michael Haneke presents the commonplace in an unorthodox manner, not in order to aggrandize it in the Marxist sense, or to make it more interesting, but to make it more real-less like a movie by demanding attention to the filter. Tales of ordinary people are intertwined, with magnification on time/space intersection. Flagrant cuts to assure you that Haneke's certain that a scene never really finishes. Juliette Binoche, Thierry Neuvic, Josef Bierbichler, Djibril Kouyaté stand out among a universally effective cast. "Where is Africa?" It's "no man is an island stuff," with emphasis on cultural differences and self-restraint. Builds very slowly, but confidently, Haneke's artistic intentions and social motivation remain unclear into the second half of the film. Well done, no question about it. I like being entertained just a bit more as I'm being taught, but people who spend less time watching Dangermouse will get plenty out of this.
