THE BLOB (1958) ** Teenagers, cars, hijinx, making out in cars, good cops chasing teenagers in cars, bad cops chasing teenagers in cars, making out at the movies...it's all very fifties. The plot is effectively nonexistant, the actors emote the kind of fear most of us would have at being chased by an enlarged glop of jelly, things come to a conclusion in a diner. It's interesting to see that Steve McQueen didn't come ready-made macho, in fact he's unnecessarily timid for the most part. Not that he's very good either, but he did eventually get that way. Very relaxing for a film in which earthlings are faced with an extraterrestrial threat of eschatological proportions by something that is usually found on dinner rolls, moves along about as quickly as those hopped up hotrods in a manner too good natured not to be enjoyable. Mundane, in a legendary manner.
