ABBOTT AND COSTELLO IN THE FOREIGN LEGION (1950) ** Too bad the French disbanded the foreign legion, now there's nothing to write about. Those were the days, everything was a plot: First they're wrestling coaches in Brooklyn, then they go to Algiers where Lou gets Patricia Medina's veil caught in his mouth, then he buys a small harem, then Bud grabs Lou's ass, then they get chased around for awhile and are attacked by a fish with false teeth until finally everything blows up and they head back home. The beauty of A&C is that you can't spoil anything, it's all visual and execution anyway...the cleverness of a you/me/oui variation on "Who's on first" is, like most of the routines, more dumbfounding than funny but they don't have too many competitors who could be so entertaining playing hide-and-go-seek around an adobe triangle with legionnaire hats and baseball bats.
